About Hobart

History

Hobart, Tasmania’s harbour-side capital city was founded in 1804, and is the second oldest city in Australia. It now has a population of approximately 250,000 people.

Hobart city stretches along both shores of the Derwent River, and has the lofty Mt Wellington as a picturesque backdrop. Hobart is a city of sails and sandstone, festivals and flavours - colourful spinnakers on the harbour, fine old 19th century warehouses along Salamanca Place, the fun and music of the waterfront Summer Festival and excellent restaurants highlighting Tasmania’s fresh food.

In parts of Hobart, it is easy to feel as if you’ve stepped back a couple hundred years. Take a walk through Battery Point, where the city’s oldest cottages snuggle together, stroll through one of the city’s heritage parks, in the shade of mature English trees, or wander along Salamanca Place, with its line of Georgian warehouses, the sandstone chipped by convict chisels.
