Description

The southern coast of Tasmania is a place of tranquil coves and sandy beaches, such as Cockle Creek. Distant mountain peaks, sometimes capped with snow, make a spectacular backdrop to the calm waters of Recherche Bay.

This scenic area is dotted with evidence of human history including Aboriginal sites, abandoned tramways, gravestones and ruins.

The far south of Tasmania is off the beaten track for the typical tourist.  It has a wild and rugged essence, a dramatic coastline and intriguing history.  The 'sea level' experience offered by a sea kayak provides a truly unique perspective of this spectacular coastal wilderness.

About the Area

Located on Recherche Bay, on the edge of the Southwest National Park and Tasmania's World Heritage Area, is Cockle Creek – the farthest point south that you can drive in Australia.

Recherche Bay was a landing place of the historic d'Entrecasteaux expedition to find the missing explorer La Pérouse. The explorers setup a camp, made a garden and a scientific observatory in April 1792 and again in January 1793.  The expedition was reported to have also made friendly contact with the Tasmanian Aboriginal people.

In 2003, the area came into the public's attention when the private landowners proposed to log the area.  This resulted in a large-scale
campaign to protect the historic expedition site from destruction.   In a significant outcome, the owners agreed to sell their historic property to the Tasmanian Land Conservancy to be managed for the nation.

Recherche Bay is just one of the amazing locations in the far south region of Tasmania.
